As we work to regain ridership and confidence in transit, it’s critical to show the region we are doing all we can to increase safety and help those who need services.

Now is the time to try new things and be part of the solution.

We are listening + advancing new approaches.
We are reimagining safety and how we respond to homelessness, mental illness + substance abuse.
Our plan includes 10 ambassadors and hiring 20 social workers, a new supervisor of crisis intervention and outreach programs, and a new senior manager of social services partnerships.
Our new Bureau of Progressive Policing and Community Engagement will include 45 employees that are a mix of sworn and civilian staff trained in crisis intervention to respond to societal issues.
Our plan includes engaging and educating the public about BART rules and reporting options for riders who are unsure how to get someone help. We continue to get feedback that riders are not sure how to safely report situations. We offer the free BART Watch app. We must do better.
BART also plans to develop a Homeless Action Plan to help establish more collaboration between human service organizations and counties. We want to be part of the solution but we need help from the counties and new partnerships with dedicated funding. Yes, dedicated funding.
This plan is based on stakeholder engagement with public meetings in all 9 BART districts.
We reviewed data showing 39% of police calls for service were for wellbeing and medical assistance.

This presentation will be given to our board on Thursday: https://www.bart.gov/sites/default/files/docs/Progressive%20Policing%20RCI%20%20Presentation%20Jan%202020.pdf
