Who "gets" to occupy public space? And who doesn't? New important work by Sophie Trawalter, Kelly Hoffman, & Lindsay Palmer:

Lower SES students are less likely to visit & use public space on campus, esp iconic locations like UVA's Rotunda & Lawn 1/n
Researchers gave 283 UVa undergrads maps of campus and asked them to draw where they went that day: higher SES students literally drew on more of the map. They also circled more iconic spots as places where they felt they "belonged". 2/n
Next, 1099 students named their fav spots on campus & where they spent the most time. High SES students named more public spaces, esp iconic places like UVA's Rotunda. And the more students used public spaces, the more they felt they belonged. 3/n
When asked specifically about 7 iconic places (n = 788; Rotunda, Lawn, Chapel, Pavilion Gardens, Pavilion 8, McGregor Room, Observatory), high SES students said they used them more often. And students using those spaces felt more like they belonged on campus. 4/n
Finally, in a roughly 6-hour experiment, students (n = 78) were asked to visit an iconic campus location or go about their day (purportedly to test "MapMyRun"). Low SES students assigned to visit an iconic spot felt they belonged more afterwards, closing the SES gap. 5/n
