One final thread on this week’s events, and then I’m leaving this tragic moment for others to discuss.
I’m seeing lots of people compare the invasion of our Capitol building to this summer’s nationwide protests following George Floyd’s death.
Here’s why that is wrong-headed:
I’m seeing lots of people compare the invasion of our Capitol building to this summer’s nationwide protests following George Floyd’s death.
Here’s why that is wrong-headed:
First, let me firmly establish that rioting is wrong. Even when one agrees with the ultimate cause behind the behavior, we must clearly condemn violence wherever it occurs. Despite what many claim, Democrats did that this summer. https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-biden-condemn-violence/fact-check-joe-biden-has-condemned-violent-protests-in-the-last-three-months-idUSKBN25V2O1
What happened at the Capitol was not rioting; it was insurrection. This was not the tragic, unacceptable torching of a business in an attempt to draw attention to injustice. This was the tragic, unacceptable invasion of our seat of power, in an attempt to overthrow an election.
And while politicians on both sides rightly condemned rioting last summer, the president himself encouraged Wednesday’s invasion of the Capitol.
Furthermore, the president encouraged the invasion based on the lie that our election was fraudulent. He, nor his attorneys, have presented a shred of credible evidence that the election was “stolen.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2021/01/06/business/election-fraud.amp.html
Your political preferences don’t matter to me. What matters: that each of us roundly condemn the attack on our democracy that took place Wednesday. That we condemn the lies and incitement that led to it. And that we acknowledge that this was more than a mere riot.
Rejecting insurrectionists, and the politicians whose lies gave rise to rebellion, won’t divide our nation. It will unite us in the name of democracy. It will protect our ability to disagree on issues without fearing that such disagreement will threaten our free society. (End)
