The past seven days have proved that the United States is strongly divided. It’s moved past rhetoric and has led to actual violence.

Let me share a few thoughts on what Christians must and must not do in order to be salt and light to a watching — and hurting — world.
First, what Christians cannot do — turn a blind eye to injustice. History has proven over and over again that putting your head in the sand NEVER helps the oppressed, only the oppressor. (Read MLK).

Second, what Christians cannot do — become so disillusioned by the political idolatry on the right that they run to political idolatry on the left.

Don’t be fooled. Political parties cannot be given your unconditional allegiance without moral corruption being around the corner.
Third, what Christians can do — remember the words of Paul. “We are Christ’s ambassadors.” Are you as passionate about spreading the gospel of the kingdom as you are about campaigning for a candidate?

Do you know the gospel? It’s more than the sinners prayer.
Fourth, slander has to be labeled what it is — sinful. It’s easy to take jabs at “the other side” because of the internet. Hypocrisy is documented for all to see. But nobody has ever been shamed out of sin.

Paul says, “It is the kindness of God that leads people to repentance.”
Are you ready to embrace the teachings of Jesus and “bless those who persecute you?”

Are you ready to embrace the teachings of Jesus and “forgive seventy seven times.”

Are you ready to be “slow to speak and quick to listen?”
Friends, the way forward is found in the teachings of Jesus. May I recommend believers everywhere not only read, but memorize and apply the sermon on the mount? Our world would never be the same.
