Growing up Catholic taught me a lot about reconciliation and forgiveness. I remember going to confession and asking for forgiveness with the understanding that I wouldn't and shouldn't be able to do it again. If I did, or if I knew I would, I wasn't forgiven.
With reconciliation, one has to ask for forgiveness, recognize what harm was done, and work to be better in order for that process to start.
I take these lessons with me as I watch politicians talk about unity and healing and reconciliation. I haven't seen any of those who stoked the flames ask for forgiveness.
I haven't seen any of those involved acknowledge the wrong doing they caused that lead to the death of five people and destruction of our Capitol.
Instead, I see them go straight to the end. Straight to forgiveness when none was asked for. Reconciliation when they've done nothing to show they've changed.
Accountability, acknowledgement, repercussions, and forgiveness need to happen before reconciliation can begin.
