It should be simple. A corporation is not the government and should be allowed to control access to its platform. But when one does it and then others jump in and start blocking apps under the same, it becomes a coordinated corporate effort so shut down the speech of some.
That makes it harder for free speech. Because then the sites move to the web and thereafter corporations start blocking them from hosting services. They chase off all the speech they don’t like. And you can say it is only Speech X, but we’ve already seen them come for others.
We see the harassment of Christians for their sexual ethics. We see the harassment of those not down with the insanity of the transgender agenda. Essentially, over time, anything progressives determine is bad speech becomes banned speech. That then has a problem.
The speech will find a way, but it will only be from the most true believers, who are the most committed, which tend to be the most passionate, who will then set the tone without moderating voices as committed to trying to find web hosts and fringe outlets.
The extremes will ratchet up instead of moderate because more speech tends to diffuse situations like pouring hot water from a small container across a pan. Now it will take longer to cool and more hot water added in a small container will keep the temperature from moderating.
You cannot get rid of the speech anymore than you can get rid of money in politics. What you can do is make it more confined where it becomes hotter and eventually boils over. The reason the conspiracy nonsense about the election was able to get to the point it did is
Because it started on chat sites where exiles from the major platforms had gone that are still so easily found that lots of Trump supporters could find them and there were no moderating voices there. This will get worse, not better, because of what Twitter, Apple, Google, etc do.
As a final aside, what did Trump supporters think would happen after two months of lies and conspiracies joined with QAnon to march on Washington? This was obviously bound to happen and now, through their actions, others will use it as an excuse.
