The point of impeachment is not to unify Americans. The point of impeachment is to punish a criminal who holds office. Constitutional conservatives, Democrats, libertarians, and progressives are at risk of losing the narrative 🧵
It is abundantly plain that no policy choice adopted by a Democrat administration will mollify the GOP establishment. Obamacare? A Republican plan that the institutional GOP has fought tooth and nail for a decade now.
Impeaching the president isn't a political stunt. That man invited a mob to ransack the US Capitol. People died. He is not sorry and he is not stopping, and the mob won't stop either.
Yet Democrats and constitutional conservatives keep reacting to Cruz, Graham, and Scalise, who are out there bleating that impeachment will not heal a divided America or some other vacuous complaint.
Impeachment also won't speed up the vaccines or fix me a sandwich. The institutional GOP's nonsense about "healing" ought to be ignored, and the majority of Americans who uphold democracy and the rule of law ought not repeat it or engage with it at all.
Instead, the case for impeachment ought to be publicly debated on its merits, which are plain for all to see. Sure, impeachment is politics. But that's exactly why the narrative matters, and why unifying Americans is the wrong way to frame it.
