I’m always struck by how frequently I hear Americans romanticize & prioritize liberty over freedom. Its problematic. There’s a certain self absorption & individuality associated w/American constructs of liberty; its immature. https://twitter.com/ananyaucla/status/1347938893220364290
We’ve not graduated to freedom yet; attachment to frontierism, dominionist ideas make it worse.
There’s a racialized attachment to liberty in the U.S. which explains why it’s inappropriately interchanged w/freedom. Conversely, liberation is considered anathema to freedom in the u.s. because it connotes a freedom transcending borders & a nation-based identity.
More simply liberty; a classic American ideal reads as white and liberation reads as black & brown and thus anti American. These are the zeitgeists of dialogues on freedom not broached often enough.
