Dear Remaining Trump Supporters, (A THREAD)
This letter will serve as my declaration of independence from how you feel. We’ve been told that you are in financial distress — economic anxiety, they call it — and that we should reach out and try to learn why you’re hurting,
This letter will serve as my declaration of independence from how you feel. We’ve been told that you are in financial distress — economic anxiety, they call it — and that we should reach out and try to learn why you’re hurting,
who hurt you, and what we can do to come together and make you feel better. what we can do to come together and make you feel better.
That seems reasonable, I will admit, albeit at odds with the “bootstraps” philosophy you profess. Nevertheless, it sounds like the empathetic
That seems reasonable, I will admit, albeit at odds with the “bootstraps” philosophy you profess. Nevertheless, it sounds like the empathetic
thing to do. Indeed, caring for the “least of these” is what we have been taught. But here’s the problem — it’s a lie.
Most of you, like me, were born into a level of privilege unparalleled in the history of the world — a white American.
Most of you, like me, were born into a level of privilege unparalleled in the history of the world — a white American.
You were provided a free public education, a social safety net to take care of you in times of need and in your aging years, preferential access to every public and private institution in this nation, and police protection at a level not afforded to any other community.
With all of this privilege, you placed your support behind a President, who on his first day as a candidate, declared Mexicans to be rapists and drug dealers. Since then, he has called white supremacists in Charlottesville “very fine people,” mocked a disabled reporter in front
of a packed rally, bragged about sexually assaulting women, separated immigrant children from their parents and put them in cages at our border, and this week, called anarchists who violently attacked our nation’s U.S. Capitol “very special.”
“We love you,” he said.
“We love you,” he said.
And yet, you continue to support him.
Meanwhile, he has done nothing in his four years to address your so-called economic anxiety through policy. He has opposed a minimum wage increase; started a trade war with China that cost us critical manufacturing jobs and resulted in China
Meanwhile, he has done nothing in his four years to address your so-called economic anxiety through policy. He has opposed a minimum wage increase; started a trade war with China that cost us critical manufacturing jobs and resulted in China
punishing our family farmers with debilitating tariffs; slashed funding to healthcare for working families; and provided tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent of Americans, while cutting unemployment benefits, access to nutrition for families in distress, and cutting Medicare
And yet, you continue to support him.
So I am left with just one conclusion. It’s not your economic anxiety that has drawn you to him and kept you there.
It’s racism.

It’s racism.
You say you’ve been left behind — that everyone but you gets special treatment — that you are the ones being discriminated against. Well, let me tell you the cold hard truth. You have fallen prey to the lie that there is only so much prosperity to go around and that if people of
color, immigrants, LGBTQ people, the disabled, and others join the American Dream, you are required to sacrifice. It’s simply not true.
Let me share another cold hard truth. You are only a few years from being the minority in this country. There is a new American majority emerging, and it’s comprised of the people you have tried to maintain supremacy over for centuries.
So, if you still support Donald Trump after all you know, after all that has happened, I’m done with you and your feelings. I’m done with coddling your childish behavior masked in patriotism and tough-guy bravado. I don’t want a dialogue with you. You have made yourselves clear.
You are un-American, and this already great country is moving on, with or without you. You will not scare us into paralysis, and you will not win.
