I study white supremacy in institutions and the perpetuation of white supremacist violence. Here is a thread of terms other white scholars have suggested I use instead of white supremacy. 1/
White entitlement: "Do we really have to use the term 'white supremacy'? Is that merited?" If we don't use it to describe *actual white supremacist violence*, then what are we doing? 2/
Racism: That's not off-base, but it's a consequence of the system, not the system itself, friends. Next. 3/
Extremism: Not specific enough, and often used by white scholars (intentionally or not) in order for them to feel more comfortable and get around reckoning with systems that benefit them. Next. 4/
"Do you have to talk about race at all?": The fact that you are asking that question gives me my answer. Next. 5/
We have to get comfortable using the term "white supremacist" to describe not only violent insurrectionists but more mundane, everyday practices if we actually want to dismantle the thing. /fin
P.S. Here is a short piece from Tema Okun that I have found helpful in recognizing the ways I perpetuate white supremacy in my everyday life. https://www.dismantlingracism.org/uploads/4/3/5/7/43579015/okun_-_white_sup_culture.pdf
