Thread/A few thoughts on social media and speech-

First of all, Twitter can do what it wants. It is a private entity.

Additionally, it is entirely consistent w capitalism for consumers to voice their concerns when they like a product but want to see changes.
I am on the side of the principle of free speech (which differs than the right of free speech, which doesn’t apply to social media). On principle, it makes sense to eliminate calls for violence, illegal activities, etc. That being said, any standard should be applied consistently
It is clear that Twitter & other social cos terms are neither sharp, clear and consistent with free speech in principle, nor are they applied consistently, which is a relevant point of frustration for users. Those inconsistencies should be pointed out.
I support more speech because it sets a dangerous precedent for a few people to choose what is & isn’t acceptable. Outside of non-protected speech (illegal/calls for violence), if you think a few should be making rules and judgments, don’t be surprised when it happens to you.
Moreover, when you push those people who are already disenfranchised away, they will come together elsewhere, and become more disenfranchised. History has proven that does not work out well. Be very careful regarding what you advocate.
I am sure those who believe in central planning, collectivism, etc don’t understand this, but I implore you to think more deeply and critically.
I do think it is wise to know you don’t own your content here. Make a regular archive of your data if you want access to your content (go under “settings” and you can request an archive of your data) and find ways for people to find you otherwise, if important.
If you are thinking of leaving, remember that emotions can run deep and quick, so think about leaving your account in case you want to come back to it in weeks, months or years and not having to “start over”. Flexibility and options are undervalued.
I enjoy Twitter because I enjoy many of the users. I have formed friendships, fun acquaintance-ships and even collaborated professionally with those I have met and connected with through Twitter. I hope many of you will stay and try to continue to make the experience better.
