White folks: a short tutorial on the difference between violent white supremacy & the systemic & structural kind. 👇🏾
The former is what we saw in DC, the Quebec city mosque shooting, the attack on Indigenous lobster fishers. The latter is colourblind public policy (covid response for ex), poverty rates, lack of representation in govt/business/non-profit leadership roles,
school curriculum that centres Euro-centric perspectives, the distribution of wealth across racial identities, ability to access opportunities for upward mobility, ignoring Indigenous land sovereignty, etc etc

Here’s the part that will upset Canadians:
🗣America is arguably much more violently white supremacist. Canada is just as—& if you ask me, much more—systemically & structurally white supremacist.

The reality is, the systemic comes ahead of the violent. No stopping the violent part w/o ending the systemic.
This is why the Canadian politicians’ denunciation of the violent part is pure theatre & dangerously ignorant. It IS here & the violence will only grow if the systemic & structural continue unchecked.
