For everyone still trying to figure out this week’s events, may I suggest some research/listening for you? Please look up the Wilmington Massacre. This occurred November 10, 1898. The white men in Wilmington, angry about the results from the last election, about the positions
newly freed black people were taking in society and government, riled up by unfounded rumors of rapes of white women, decided to overtake the government and murder the people they thought were causing them fear and discomfort. They burned, looted, and murdered, and drove the
Black population out of the city and ousted their government. We repeat these cycles because we refuse to face the reason they happened in the first place. Wednesday didn’t happen in a vacuum. The 1619 project covers this. You can also listen to this: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reveal/id886009669?i=1000504781235
Stop saying this “isn’t us”. It is. Start saying, “how do we make sure this isn’t us in the future?”.
