If, as I have argued, Trump is a spent force, spending the next twelve days in a fruitless effort to actually impeach him (the Senate will never take that vote) is a waste of time. It only plays into Trump’s grievance narrative.1/
Better, as T.S. Eliot wrote to let his term “end, not with a bang, but a whimper.”Instead of virtue signaling by impeachment, the Senate and House have far more important tasks. The House should investigate how the Insurrection was fomented. 2/
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Insurrection was plotted by the President, his family and a small group of allies-“the president’s family members, lawyers and a group of allies had posted more than 200 times about election fraud on Twitter” in the last month.3/
“Those posts were retweeted nearly 3.5 million times and liked more than 9 million times, the analysis found. Ms. Powell sent the most tweets about election fraud—116—followed by Mr. Giuliani, who sent 32.”4/
It was Trump who personally called the insurrectionists to Washington. “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th,” Mr. Trump wrote on Dec. 19. “Be there, will be wild!” The House needs to investigate and answer many questions. Only then can this cabal be indicted for insurrection.5/
Questions such as: Did Hawley, Cruz or others have any influence over the Senate Sargent at Arms’ decision not to ask for Pentagon security support before the Insurrection? Who paid for the large number of busses to bring the mob to Washington?6/
Why did Capitol Police open the gates to the mob? What role did Facebook, Twitter and YouTube play in the organization of the Insurrection? Who paid for the boosted posts urging people to come to Washington on January 6? 7/
As for the Senate, they need to start on Monday morning approving Joe Biden’s Cabinet. As the Washington Post reported

“President-elect Joe Biden’s incoming administration is in danger of not having a single Cabinet official confirmed on Inauguration Day, 8/
upsetting a tradition going back to the Cold War of ensuring the president enters office with at least part of his national security team in place.” These are critical Congressional duties that cannot wait while the charade of another unsuccessful Impeachment is performed. 9/
There will be ample time under a Biden Justice Department, to bring the Coup Plotters before the bar of justice. For now there is urgent work to be done to heed the words of the great patriot of the Revolution, Tom Paine-“We have it in our power to begin the world over again”
