This is not an anti-Devonta Smith tweet.

This is a tweet based on facts.

@theundroppables

At the moment Devonta Smith is 6’1” 175-lbs

With a BMI of 23.1
Player Profiler has 980 WRs in its current data base.

Out of those 980 WRs, 6 have a lower BMI than Devonta Smith.

They are:

Reggie Davis UDFA
Jovon Durante UDFA
J.J. Nelson 5th rd
Marquess Wilson 7th rd
Rudy Rudolph UDFA
Alexander Hollins UDFA
The best of the group is Nelson who has a career 1475 yards. He ran a 4.28 40-yard dash.

that’s 75 more yards for his career than Justin Jefferson had in his 2020 rookie season.

M. Wilson is second with 777.

The rest combine for less than M. Wilson.
To be fair, Smith will be drafted in the 1st round so he’ll be an anomaly.

Many believe a BMI of 26 or more is ideal. Some even will accept 25. Let’s look at all of those drafted in the first two rounds with a BMI of <25
There are 8 in total: round.pick (BMI)

Ashley Lelie 1.19 (24.6)
Marquise Brown 1.25 (24.5)
Calvin Ridley 1.26 (24.9)
Justin Hunter 2.02 (23.9)
Dante Pettis 2.12 (24.5)
Paul Richardson 2.13 (23.7)
K.J. Hamler 2.14 (24.8)
Jerome Simpson 2.15 (24.3)
Of this group, Ridley is a now considered a success - achieving it in his 3rd season. He has the highest BMI of this group - almost 25.
He also ran a 4.43.

Brown/Hamler are works in progress. Brown has not hit in two seasons. Hamler’s rookie season was also underwhelming.
The other 5 did not hit.

All of them have a higher BMI than Smith as his current size.
So what does this all mean?

Devonta has less than two months to put on around 15 pounds in order to have a BMI of around 25.
Sounds easy for us most probably but most of us have a much higher BMI already.

He also has to do this and maintain his speed.

Sounds easier than it is.
If Devonta Smith can gain at least 10 pounds and run as good as Calvin Ridley’s 4.43, then I think he has a shot. Not a guarantee but a shot.

If he cannot reach this goal, then stats and history are overwhelmingly against him.
If he does measure in light with a low BMI and dominates like he did in college then he will definitely be a unicorn.

So if it is my turn in the rookie draft and I have to choose between Ja'Marr Chase and Devonta Smith, you know who I'll be drafting.
I'll let others "Chase" the Unicorn, even if he was voted the best college football player in 2020.
