I had mentioned over the summer that St Mirren seemed to be a team on the ascendancy in the SPFL. I don't know what they are doing in analytics for game prep, opposition analysis, etc, but they signed an agreement for recruitment with Scisports in October 2019.
They are now 7th in the table and also 7th in npxG differential per game. They have dramatically underperformed their npxG- scoring just 14 non-penalty goals vs about 23 npxG (per Modern Fitba). Hibs are 4th in the table but 6th in npxG differential. The big difference is that
St Mirren are doing this with about 40% of Hibs player wage bill (looking at 19/20 data). They just brought in Brophy and a guy (Quaner) who is 29 and got meaningful minutes at Huddersfield in the Championship in 18-19. He is 6 foot 3 and on the surface, would appear quite a coup
for a team of St Mirren's level and financial resources. They just gave Rangers a torrid time in back to back games in December- aggregate npxG over the 2 games was 2.23 vs 2.76, so not bad given they have about 6% of Rangers' player wages.
If they can get some production out
If they can get some production out
of their new strikers, St. Mirren could threaten for 4th or 5th. Imagine them qualifying for Europe? They have 3 games in hand and are on the upswing with what appears to be a coherent road map at the club. I wonder if their leadership are blaming Covid, no fans, and Boli?
