In what is going to be a completely trivial thread in this week of horrors, I give you: Erin tries clotted cream for the first time.
This thread brought to you by the Thursday morning early modern work group who have been explaining British things to me, and whom I have deeply offended by referring to 'biscuits' as 'cookies'
First of all, am trying this cream. I am given to understand this is already wading into controversial waters re: Cornwall v Devon.
As a tangent, yesterday I got to witness a FIGHT OVER SCONES in real time and it was everything I ever dreamed of.
The top of the cream has a crumbly crusty bit. I am told this is a Luxury Feature and not a bug.
Wikipedia says that clotted cream tastes sweet? My first impression is that clotted cream on its own tastes like...butter?
This has me worried about the next step which is, I'm afraid, going to horrify many of you as I stomp all over a Grand British Tradition.
I am going to put the cream IN COFFEE
I have also learned that cream in coffee is Not A Thing good British people do. But I am here to inform you that you are missing out on a beautiful treat.
While we wait for me to fill a French press with coffee to try this properly, did you know over here they call it a 'cafetiere'?
Cafetiere, aubergine, courgette, gateaux. The strangest of the British use of French words for foods though is surely 'mange tout' for sweet peas?
We are back. Normally I'd be using double cream I have hanging around from baking and just pour some in? I don't really know how much to add with clotted cream!
(Yes I do cream/milk first. WE DO NOT HAVE TIME FOR DISSENSION ON THIS ONE.)
Also I remind you I am already wading in some murky waters here. Please do not kick me out of the country.
IT IS VERY GOOD.
This ends part 1 of the thread. In part 2 I will make scones and then decide once and for all this whole cream/jam v jam/cream thing. Get your pitchforks ready.
ALTHOUGH my plan was to make raspberry lemon scones and I have also been told this is not a done thing?

Lemon raspberry scones:
Comments open for suggestions about what scones are best, of course. I'm also planning on using apple tomato jam which I'm sure is some sort of unforgiveable heterodox.
