Had a blast this week working with the developing players from the North Adelaide Basketball club at our sold out 'Lift Off' camps. What were the concepts and skills we worked on? Follow this thread.
One of the first concepts introduced was my three step check list for what a good off posession is:

1) Spacing
2) Create an Advantage
3) Shoot

We weren't focused on the end result of the posession (made or miss) but more on the process/method of how the players created the shot
We then gave them the two main goals of offence:

1) Shoot EASY shots ("Catch & Shoots" off of "space advantages" ➕ Layups of any kind)
2) Make things HARD for the defence (like 👇 clip).

This HARD/EASY verbiage is so simple and useful when teaching any facet of the game.
One of the biggest❓for coaches is how we can improve our players' decision making on the catch (i.e. reading & attacking closeouts). We feel that players are better at reading body cues of defenders if they are ready to play PRIOR to the catch. We call this being 'shot ready'.
Our preference is for players to make quick➕right decisions but we will take them at least being QUICK. Why? Because they can always go to a counter move if D picks their 1st decision. If they are slow/hold the 🏀they'll not only get their decision picked but they play vs set D
One thing we had to get our players out of the habit of doing was cutting for the sake of cutting. Cutting when you have no reason just 'screws up space'. We want our cuts to be FAST and in reaction to an advantage from the D. Like this example - a cut vs 'loss of vision adv'.
'Deception' was another concept that was taught to the campers. We want our players to be 'tricky' and hard to read. Deception is less about technique and more how you can sell to the D with your body weight and eyes that you are doing something & then quickly do something else.
When we talked about creating advantages on offence, we described them as defensive mistakes or 'screw ups'. We put a name to each of the 12 advances and also taught some simple methods of creating them. Here is @FCBBTogether using a PNR to create a '2 on the ball'.
Here is another method of creating advantages - off ball screening. In this clip, the screen creates an 'overhelp' advantage which the offence punishes by passing to the screener who now has a 'space' advantage for an open shot.
Another method we taught to create advs was 'Gets' action (where two players work together by passing & moving off to create a D mistake). In this clip, the 'Get' is cued by the D 'Icing the Side PNR. It leads to a 'lane advantage' for the O to drive into. END THREAD
