I can’t wait to see this film. I’m disappointed that the Guardian used the term “Brit Bashing”. I don’t think portraying the colonial power as being baddies during an event that halved our population is “Brit Bashing” tbh. Id call it historical accuracy https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/09/irish-film-arracht-eschews-brit-bashing-to-tackle-famine-taboo
I’d imagine too, that If the film maker choose to tell a purely human story, rather than focus on the politics. It’s not because they were avoiding “Brit Bashing”
Heres a direct quote from the person who’s job it was to provide famine relief. End of discussion. Fuck off. It is not “Brit Bashing” to point out this piece of history.
“It was 170 years ago, get over it”. Yes, we’d love to. But the Guardian in 2021 thinks that it’s “Brit Bashing” if we call it a bad thing that happened rather than accepting that colonialism was evil
There was a way to write this article, and make all the same points, without using a reactionary, loaded, colonial term that shouldn’t exist.
This article was written by an Irish person as far as I can tell. Have the courage &criticality to be decolonial about history, to acknowledge the pain of our history. While simultaneously being able to love the ordinary person in England as your fellow human being. It’s not hard
“Dunkirk Eschews German bashing to tackle WW2 Taboo”
last point. This idea that we mustn’t look at our history, because it will unleash an anti British hatred. Is colonial thinking. It’s bog monkey dynamite skunk stuff. It implies that we are violent animals who shouldn’t be allowed to read. It denies us intelligence and compassion
