Quick thread about Trump being banned from Twitter: obviously this is a GREAT thing. Twitter and Facebook are so complicit in his rise to power and perhaps they are starting to take responsibility for this, however belated (although it’s mad it took the events of this week). But
It’s pretty impossible to de-platform someone in the digital age. When I was researching the rise of the alt-right for my book and how this movement used social media, they went to more extreme platforms when they were kicked off Facebook and Twitter
So, when they couldn’t communicate there, they went to 4-chan, etc, and actually that made things worse. An expert in this told me about a really toxic group who were thrown off every mainstream/ known platform and then created their own.
He said: “we know they are still out there and still mobilising, but now we can’t see it.” Which is really scary. So now Trump isn’t Twitter’s problem, but he is still going to be a problem for us collectively as his audience still exists and will follow him (the end)
