This is quite shocking - chemistry misconceptions taking root before 12 can still exist at 18!

Children and adults across centuries have instinctively come up with the same misconceptions, e.g. light rays come from eyes to see has perpetuated through time, and children now will suggest that is what is happening 👀 #ASEConf2021
We also need to remember teaching vs learning is not the same; they might not have understood the way you meant them to.

Letting go of beliefs and forgetting misconceptions and that can be really hard.

Example of playing the flute and having to start again on how to play in order to get better.

I had this in Y12 I remember changing my viola now hold and it was horrifically hard 🙈😂. I like this metaphor!

Teachers are experts who are able to present things in a way for novices/adv. learners to understand.
Teaching allows us to identify misconceptions in our own learning. Ability to identify the misconception as well as the correct answer gives larger classroom gains! #ASEConf2021

We actually need to build on these incorrect ideas to reach the correct understanding.

Just telling them doesn’t work. Research shows this. You have to help them build the correct ideas for themselves #ASEConf2021
Scientific knowledge suppresses but does not supplant earlier intuitions (Shtulman and Valcarcel 2012). #ASEConf2021
We need to plan around these misconceptions. And also be careful when we teach simpler models at lower KS. Probably just bear it in mind! #ASEConf2021
