Exceptionally, local candidates should be entitled to a free mailshot as in parliamentary elections. I know this would put a strain on vetting service, but it is at least worth talking about.
There has been much said about democracy under threat. To me, the single biggest threat is not US weirdos, it is that UK local democratic participation has utterly collapsed.
Any ward with under 25% turnout should be declared a ward of exceptional democratic concern. This would require returning officers and electoral services to make an action plan. If I may observe on an area I know well, it strikes me as excessively bizarre that Manchester candidates can express admiration of the work done in Georgia, yet remain silent about the democratic deficit closer to home.
