I’m reading Ezekiel in my morning time with God, and today I’m struggling with chapter 8 where God is angry and outraged at the idolatry of Israel. But NEVER in all Scripture does God express such outrage about the ways women are abused and violated in Scripture.
I know Judges is a different genre of writing, but there is no mention of God being outraged at the rape and murder of the concubine, or the subsequent murder & rape that follows. It’s hard to read about an all-powerful God who is much angrier at idolatry than about rape.
I know there’s an argument that once people put God in the right place those other forms of violence don’t flourish, but you’ve only got to look at David and Solomon (or any number of perpetrator’s in Christian leadership) to know that seems rather inaccurate.
When reading that passage, I remain a Christian only because my experience of God is so radically different to the jealous violence of Ezekiel’s God. Perhaps it’s that the Bible is full of men making God in their image...?
