1. As a private company, Twitter can ban whomever it wants. We all chose to use it and follow its rules. And the US First Amendment allows Twitter to moderate and remove content.
2. In theory, we can chose other social media if we're not satisfied. In practice, Twitter's role has become so important it's hard to imagine the US President can't use it. We see social platforms as public forums that should be available to everyone, even if they aren't.
3. The huge influence of social media exists thanks to their users. If users move somewhere else because they disagree with rules, this influence will lower. We may see it soon with the switch from Whatsapp to Signal. We should all be able to imagine a life without Twitter.
4. If Trump can be banned for inciting violence, same rules should apply to other leaders. It's a matter of credibility and consistency for Twitter.
5. Right now, Twitter has absolutely not enough resources to moderate all content published worldwide.
6. Trump's ban should be read in the US' context first : people overspeculate he might organize a military coup, another riot, launch a nuclear strike, etc. Twitter is a US platform with US employees. They follow US politics but not necessarily other countries'.
7. There should however be other options. You can do content moderation without banning a user. You can censor a tweet, add context, etc. As Twitter already did in the past. I don't see how Trump's latest tweet was more dangerous.
8. Since censorship from platforms isn't right, has anyone any solution against lies, fake news, alternative realities, incitement to hatred and violence on social media?
9. Twitter's decision will probably accelerate the fragmentation of the internet and social media with alternative platform gaining influence, alternatives with more extremists and less scrutiny, thus strengthening polarization and alternative realities.
