John is right - this is an urgent issue. I have tried to talk about the insider threat issue w/r/t far-right/white supremacist extremism in the military and law enforcement with people who served in one or the other and too often the reaction is defensiveness and disengagement. https://twitter.com/JohnHultquist/status/1347778853222178816
In my experience monitoring such groups in support of law enforcement, these people often pursue LEO or military careers because they offer positions of power that are psychologically validating and opportunities to engage in state-sanctioned violence. Truth hurts.
The correct response if you're in law enforcement leadership: https://twitter.com/ByMikeBaker/status/1347784009695207425
The thing about far-right penetration of MIL or LE is that it goes beyond generic insider threat. B/c of the roles such orgs play, the counterintelligence aspects of insider threat take on a whole new urgency especially given the implications for insiders to enable terrorist ops.
So when you identify that an individual in a MIL or LE outfit is aligned with an extremist outfit or ideology, suddenly all their actions and lines of access need to be given a full CI treatment. And as I type this, I am acutely aware that's much more easily said than done.
