I have some thoughts on the YAL situation. Please give this thread a read:
YAL is in need of major change. I’ve said it before and will say it again: liberty is for EVERYONE. Black, white, male, female, etc.
We cannot expect to effectively foster a culture of non-aggression if we remain silent on mistreatment in the movement.
We cannot expect to effectively foster a culture of non-aggression if we remain silent on mistreatment in the movement.
Most important thing to say up front: if you have the time to read this, please take the time to go read the stories and statements of the women bravely coming forward today.
I should clarify something else: my association with YAL is a very recent thing, and I am in no position of power, influence, or notoriety there. I’m just a 16 year old passionate about the movement who jumped at the opportunity to get involved on the school level.
I was appalled by what I read today. When I thought about how hard it was to process the information, I knew I could only begin to imagine how incredibly difficult it must have been for the people speaking up. Again, I want everyone to recognize their incredible courage here.
There’s a very real chance not many people read this thread, that’s fine. Again, if you are here, please spend less time listening to me and go listen to the survivors who are sharing their stories tonight, as well as the other people amplifying the message.
Thanks very much to the people most outspoken on this tonight. Thanks @jessinicoleb. Thanks @ProperlyZuri. And, most importantly, thanks @realPOTUS2040.
I’m embarrassed that I ever thought it was wise to engage in idolatry of some of these folks in YAL who I now know the truth about. More than anything, I want to bring attention to the very real issue that not just this movement, but many political movements and workplaces face.
To reiterate: it’s not a real movement for liberty until everyone is safe and free in the spaces where the movement takes place. So let’s get to work. First step: demand accountability from @LibertyCliff.
