What if there is no cancel culture? What if (before the internet) people who didn’t like you or your work told their friends and then your project flopped and you stopped getting opportunities, but because of the internet you actually get the personal feedback directly?
I’m inclined to believe that people today just feel more entitled to both having long, never ending careers and having their stupid opinions heard and haven’t accepted that it’s never before been the case. That relevance does wax and wane.
Maybe we have a stagnant culture because we never rotate in new voices because people who are no longer en vogue demand a permanent platform? You’re not canceled, we’re over you.
My therapist once told me that you can never truly break up with a narcissist. They just keep coming back. I think we have more of a narcissism problem than a cancel culture one.
