Tracking safety: what do the data show? About 2 million vaccines doses given for mRNA vaccines in the US, 21 cases of anaphylaxis. That's 1 in 90,000 vaccinated. Could this have been picked up in vaccine trials of sizes of 30 K or 44K where half got vaccine. Unlikely, right? 1/5
18/21 had symptoms in 30 min. 17/21 had a history of alergy (food, medicines, bee/wasp stings, other vaccines). 7 had history of anaphylaxis. Almost all responded to epinephrine. 4 needed hospitalization. Half were in 20 to 40 year olds. 2/5
19/21 in women. Is there a gender difference in safety? Possible but 62% vaccinated were women. Will same apply to all vaccines? Unlikely, but other vaccines= possible other side-effects. Post-vax safety monitoring essential-called adverse event foll. immunizn surveillance. 3/5
btw Anaphylaxis is a serious, rapidly progressive allergic reaction from which people can die. Rare (1/90,000 mRNA mostly already known allergic people), preparedness critical. Hence the importance of waiting 30 min post-vaccination as per Govt of India guidance. 4/5
SO much to learn about vaccine safety. But already know that anaphylaxis risk is 1 in 770,000 for influenza vaccines. mRNA vaccine risk about 8.5 higher than flu but still rare, & managed easily with quick recovery. Take your vaccines safely in an authorized, prepared place. 5/5
