I would just feel significantly reassured if Schumer and Pelosi were able to convince me that they fully grasp that they could have been murdered on a livestream.

The fact that none of them have physically attacked Cruz or Hawley... I just don’t know. I just do not know if they understand.

What I perceive as Democratic leadership’s inability to grasp how close they came to violent televised death is actually one of the most disturbing parts of this for me.

You expect violence from violent extremists. That’s not surprising.

You don’t so much expect the targets of that violence to react with “well this was all very unfortunate and someone really ought to do something”.

That said, if I was a US Senator, neither Cruz and Hawley would ever be physically safe around me again.

And here’s what really gets me.

Do people like Cruz and Hawley actually think they would have been safe?

They probably do, don’t they?

But the people who stormed the building didn’t seem interesting in drawing fine distinctions.

They could have been killed just as easily. In a melee, in crossfire, by accident, by people who didn’t care.

But in their world, it’s never them. Nothing bad ever happens to them.

Let me be clear: I am *sure* that many people in that building did and do understand what was facing them. I’m sure of it. I’ve heard them talk about it.

But there are a number of top Democrats who seem chronically unable to apprehend the situation facing them.

And unfortunately they’re often the ones making the decisions.

It’s frankly disturbing to me the number of people who seem to believe there’s no middle ground between “tut tut all this unpleasant business but must keep a stiff upper lip” and “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH”
