So ... I don't really ever applaud speech takedowns even when I personally find the speech abhorrent. But ...
(1) I acknowledge the free speech rights of the platforms to curate their sites & think that ultimately serve users best (see Prager v Google amicus brief) & (2) I care more about marginalized voices being silenced than I do about heads of state with otherwise loud voices, BUT...
I do want there to be a diversity of platforms with a diversity of editorial and curatorial policies for users, and I don't like to see deep stack services making content decisions for their users, so the app store removals of Parler don't sit well with me . . . But . . .
I understand why a platform does not want to see its service used as a tool for an egregious abuse of official power and understand why many sites and services feel that a line was finally crossed . . .
so these were understandable and legal decisions, but we shouldn't take them lightly and we certainly shouldn't urge a general move toward more active content moderation . . . but . . .
we should also keep in mind that as exceptional as yesterday was for Americans, there are autocratic and despotic heads of state using online platforms for despotic purposes, so this is not, globally and exceptional issue.
