Borowiecki nailed it when he said players in this league get a bad rep and "deservedly so" (his words, not mine).

This league does nothing beyond surface level PR that it can profit from. It is happy to hold up Matt Dumba, "hockey is for everyone", pride night, etc. (1/) https://twitter.com/BroadscastPod/status/1347377106603319296
This is completely meaningless when you have players are out here saying they're going to join Parler and franchises officially partnering with Black Rifle Coffee.

This league shows us what they care about every single day, and it is not inclusivity in any kind of meaningful way
The infrastructures of hockey, including traditional media, are too entrenched in selling the story of "the crest on the front and not the name on the back" and the code. It's so hard to get any real story and access that it's just easier to tell the stories they give you.
This is most apparent in how frequently we are told that "candid" and "interesting" player interviews can only come from not asking any difficult or potentially controversial questions and being one of the boys.
All of this is to say, hockey and the structures around it are more obsessed with what has always worked and its entrenched fanbase. It is incredibly shortsighted, cowardly, and self-limiting to not undertake the actual reckoning it needs to access new, non-traditional markets.
Pre-emptively, for the "if you hate it why do you watch it" folks, my only takeaway is that you have had the privilege to exist in a world where historical social structures benefited you, such that you've never had to make these kinds of choices to enjoy things you like.
also if this wasn't clear, i would like this sport to have more guys like mark borowiecki.
