inmates are testing positive for COVID in jails across the country. In the federal system, positive inmates at Joyceville were taken to other centres to make room for those coming in from the provincial system. how does shuffling people around make sense? [1/6]
a dear friend (currently inside) told me that if one person got the flu in jail, all did. There is inadequate healthcare, poor ventilation, shared spaces & sanitation - basically conditions that make it very unsafe during COVID. [2/6]
At the Toronto South, a growing number of individuals are getting sick with the virus. Staff brought COVID in because of poor management & poor cleaning protocols; now those imprisoned are getting sick. Before the holidays, the number of positive cases was just under 100. [3/6]
During flu season, the solution to contain it is to lock down the jail. What are lockdowns? No phones, no mail, no books, no visits, no fresh air, no showers...currently, add: no PPE, no clean laundry, no cleaning supplies. [4/6]
Before Christmas, ppl at Toronto South had been in lockdown for over 30 days consecutively. In Dec, 33 prisoners started a hunger strike to demand proper action to address the outbreak in the jail. Not huge ask: literally just asking for proper protocols to be put in place. [5/6]
