1/4 Be nice if @Twitter fessed up to facilitating the movement which produced the scenes we saw in the Capitol on Wednesday. But the fact that they feel that the President of the United States should have to be silenced in order to preserve democratic freedoms is a clear signal
2/4 that free speech alone is not enough to save us from tyranny. Orwell's maxim that "if liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they don't want to hear" offers no protection from bullies and liars.
3/4 The Trump Twitter ban shows that, important though freedom of expression is, accountability is the more powerful guarantor of our freedoms. The challenge is to achieve and maintain a balance between the two.
4/4 Hopefully the Twitter ban - and his removal from Facebook, which should be made permanent - will help to restore that equilibrium, by showing that, while we each have the right to express our opinions, even the President of the United States can no longer do so with impunity.
