I’m trusting my friends on this website who actually fight fascists. Some observations: 1/6 was well coordinated and effective. Criminalization has historically been weaponized against the left and racialized people. Fascists know liberals are paper tigers.

Biden indicated he’s going to beef up federal policing and not undo harsh charges for protestors last summer. Fascism doesn’t need Trump nor the GOP—1/6 proved it. Media won’t call fascists fascists to everyone’s detriment. There were 1/6 actions at many state capitols.

The fascist right has serious organizers who coordinated a mass national action. 1/6 made no serious blows to ruling class CEOs or politician’s wealth and power. But it had a huge psychological impact: relative impunity. 85% of cops voted Trump. No surprises with Capitol cops.

Settlers, fascist or not, have always used the state to their advantage, whether plying state protections to steal land, protect property, or have general immunity from violence. People at 1/6 haven’t lost materially what Black and Indigenous have had stolen.

Settler grievance is always about maintaining supremacy over stolen land wealth. A threat to this supremacy has historically galvanized both liberals and the right to do horrible things in the name of “justice” and solidify class rule through the state.

The uprising last summer is a clear indication that neither a creeping fascism nor liberalism can resolve the deep-seated, violent inequality of settler society. One chooses to hasten and intensify the violence, the other prolongs the crisis offering superficial changes.

Biden isn’t a radical departure but a continuation of failed neoliberalism. The right played an effective long game, where four years put them decades ahead. There’s unmatched urgency among social movements, and I’m optimistic about that future. 2021 has just begun.
