Trump Twitter ban:
1. It's understandable in 1 way but...
2. I do wonder whether it will feed the narrative of 'maverick being suppressed by liberal establishment' and make his support more feral
3. Plus not overjoyed that tech magnates are getting to decide who can speak
The conspiratorial mindset of his supporters will only be fed by this. Surely he'll find some outlet for his views, which makes one wonder whether partisan divides will end up becoming institutionalised in terms of different social media platforms, feeding unchecked polarisation
Is this merely sanitising the platform so that the liberal left (which makes up a high % of active Twitter users) doesn't have to be exposed to the reality of the views of his disaffected supporters? Many of them may have ugly views, but this doesn't make him or them disappear
Attempting to simply suppress the views of large numbers (45% of Republican voters approved of the Capitol attack) isn't going to work. Those people, whose grievances are a mixture of wild fantasy, bigotry & genuine problems, aren't going to recant because Twitter banned Trump
As big an issue is the double standards of Twitter and its arbitrary, unaccountable power: China defending genocide not censored, Trump banned. It's become so central to the public debate that the power to regulate it cannot be left to the whims of Jack Dorsey
The only two logical paths are: have a genuinely pluralist social media environment, rather than the semi-monopoly that Twitter has in this space, or have Twitter regulated through an open, accountable, democratic process. The current halfway house is the worst of all worlds
