Looking at the UK Gov energy report published in December.
The electricity transfer flowchart for 2019 is here. There are more recent quarterly figures for 2020 Q1-3 but this gives the picture including Wales. Total net exports for Scotland to rUK is 15.85 TWh. /1
So for 2019:
Net exports (TWh)
Scotland > England 14.87
France > England 11.15
Wales > England 7.50
Netherlands > England5.69
Belgium > England 4.97
Scotland > N Ireland0.98
N Ireland > Rep. of Ireland0.82
Rep. of Ireland > Wales0.18
/2
This figure increase to 18.5 TWh in the last 4 quarters of available statistics which is line with the upward trend over time of gradual increases over the last 20 years.
One very important aspect of all this is the increase in renewable electricity. The target is 100% of gross electricity consumption from renewable sources and we are currently 3rd in Europe on 89.5%.
Still behind Norway and Iceland, but look how far we've come in the last decade!
From 24% in 2010 to 89.5% of electricity from renewable sources is certainly the largest jump in all of Europe in that decade. The only country to come close to that transformation is Denmark with a jump from 32.7% to 65.3%. So we're on the right track.
I bang on about this from time to time. Why you may ask? It's nothing to do with the value- these are private companies and we are not even independent yet never mind own our own nationalised energy company. It's not about that. /6
The EU have essentially linked the fisheries renegotiation with (or rather against) the UK in 2026 with negotiations on energy cooperation, ie the interconnectors which England is reliant on, as it relies on electricity from Scotland and Wales.
Both happen simultaneously. /7
So the EU know they have they UK over a barrel on electricity cooperation and can use that as a big stick to get the concessions they want on access to fishing grounds, quotas etc. Smart move, and one to bear in mind.
