Demo reels are tricky. There’s no one recipe for making the perfect reel.
How to describe a good reel? You know it when you see it. Same goes for a bad reel.
Since this is…apparently…reel season, here are some trends and highlights I’ve noticed.

Audio is VERY important. Not just sound design, but also playing with channels and layers. Music and b-roll sound, and the interaction between the two, makes a good reel into a great one
A great example of subtle sound design is @Ry_Wise’s reel:

Pacing is critical. You can’t just mix and match fast clips and slow clips. It’s difficult to watch. Use time remapping to have consistent pacing.

Always identify yourself at the start of every reel. Hiring managers get lots of applications, lots of resumes and lots of reels. Make it easy for them.

Not every reel needs to have fast music with a strong beat. That’s expected. So…go with the unexpected. Go with a different kind of song, and different pacing. That ALWAYS gets my attention.

A good reel has a strong START and a strong END. If you’re lucky enough to have someone watch your reel from start to finish, leave them with a good last impression.
@conner_pyrc does a good job with a strong start and a strong finish here:

You don’t want a reel to be boring. A good shot is interesting just once. Mix it up. Go wide, then go tight. Go high, then go low. Go inside, then outside. Keep it interesting.
The reel from @geno_velasco keeps it interesting!

Sports are about people & their emotion. If your reel showcases emotion, you’re already halfway there. If you shoot close, really close, you can make the emotion really pop.

The music you choose for your reel has to match up with your video content. If there’s no interaction between the beat and the clips, your reel just falls flat.
A great example of video & music working together to make an impact is @bradhern’s reel:

There are so many other amazing reels out there. These are just some that caught my eye.
A reel is how you present yourself. It's how you showcase your talent. Make sure you spend the time to get it right, and have the reel be your ticket to your next big opportunity.
