Georgia readers, here's the latest look at the pandemic in the state.

Short version, the state is on fire with COVID-19 and every Georgian needs to grab a bucket of water. 1/ https://amberschmidtkephd.substack.com/p/the-daily-digest-08jan2021
Today we found out that GA can vaccinate 12,000 people per day. So we'll be through the next gubernatorial election before we reach herd immunity at this rate. To use a military term, this is UNSAT. 2/
We are dead last in vaccination rate according to the latest data from CDC. The Governor rightly points out this is a heavy logistical lift. That's true for 50 states + territories too. And yet Georgia is worse at it than all of them. 3/
The Governor also said our hospitals as "managing" the current hospital burden. This is what "managing" looks like in Georgia. Healthcare workers treating COVID-19 patients, how are you "managing"? 3 regions out of ICU beds, all regions in the red zone for patient census. 4/
Record setting day for cases, 10,379 by PCR, 2917 by antigen testing. No signs of slowing down. Using PCR + Ag cases, 99 GA counties are in the top color tier for case rate. Using the DPH method (PCR only), only 21 counties are in the top tier. 5/
There are as many high schoolers infected now than all children combined during the worst week of the summer surge. 6/
There were 80 newly reported confirmed COVID-19 deaths today. 7-day death rate is increasing across all county types, but more so for rural counties in GA. 7/
So the vaccine rollout is slow and clunky, with no centralized organization of any kind. So as much as the vaccine provides hope, it will not bring this surge down. We need to do the stuff we're all tired of doing, masks, social distancing, etc. 8/
For the vaccine rollout, we have done complicated logistics in the state before. We should be activating the national guard, bringing in GEMA, using the American Red Cross, etc. Mass drive through events at stadiums, high school parking lots, etc. Think urban AND rural. 9/9
