WHY CONTEXT IS KEY IN BIBLE STUDY.

This will be short and I will only be making use of just 1 Bible passage.......

I will look for the Old article I wrote on this and share if the need arise.

According to Oxford English Dictionary.
Context is simply
the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood......
One important thing to know is that the Bible was not originally partitioned into Chapters and verses by the writers except for Psalms, this was done by scholars later simply for reference purposes. Most were written in form of a letter.
With that said, a verse of the Bible cannot be isolated from the rest.
To understand a verse, you have to look at the surrounding texts to understand the flow of things.
There are other factors to consider as like who said it, whom was is said to, what's the circumstances that...
....led to the statement or event etc.

Context will also help you get those things above too...

Let's use Philippians 4:13 as an example.
Philippians 4:13
[13] I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Without looking at this scripture contextually, I can interpret "All Things" to mean.

1. I can steal through Christ that Strengthens me

2. I can fornicate through Christ that Strengthens me
3. I can marry plenty wives through Christ that Strengthens me

And many more as I desire.

But let's look at "All things" in context
How do we do this?
We will look at what Apostle Paul was talking about in the previous verses.

Philippians 4:10-12
[10]But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.
[11]Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
[12]I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer
...need

Basically you will notice he was talking about CONTENTMENT

So basically he was saying in verse 13 that all of these THINGS I'm saying, it is through Christ that Strengthens me that I can do them
So it's not that Paul was saying I can do just anything anyhow through Christ that Strengthens Him.

I hope you get this.

So a verse does not exist in isolation, Don't just pick a verse or chapter at times and give it your own interpretation, let the scripture explain itself..
Sorry it's a bit Longer than I planned.

Thanks for reading.....

End.
