Hey, ummm academic lawtwitter, this is gonna get uncomfortable, but we really, really, really need to address the way that law schools elevate and embolden white supremacist students by treating their overt racism as intellectual discourse.
Top be clear for those who are new to my particular brand of snark, what I mean is RACISTS LIKE HAWLEY AND COTTON ARE A FEATURE OF THE LEGAL EDUCATION SYSTEM, NOT A BUG.
Couldn't live with that typo...

And another thing: It IS THERE. If you are sincere about rooting it out, don't convene a panel of white people to "listen" to BIPOC students and faculty and release a statement about your "support." Instead...(Brace yourself!)
1. Fire the racist faculty, staff, administrators, etc.
2. Don't hire more racists to replace them. (Radical!, right?)
3. When a racist does a racism in your classroom, kick them the fuck out. (Just pretend they didn't read the case if that helps you wrap your head around it.)
4. Don't confer degrees on racists. Don't admit them. Don't legitimize them. Root. Them. Out.
5. Don't celebrate or glorify your racist alums. (Not even if they're, like, super duper rich)
6. Disown alums who do a racism. (Pro-tip: "this doesn't reflect our values as an institution" statements are NOTHING. Say, "That shit was racist.")
If your institution cannot survive without a steady stream of racist students and racist donors, then shut it down. Otherwise, own that you are perpetuating the inequities in our justice system. Make it your mission statement. Be. Honest.
The practice of law is a big damn deal. People lose their lives and their liberty and their children bc of the laws we draft and implement and enforce. You are educating people who will wield tremendous power by virtue of that education. That should weigh heavy on your shoulders.
We may not be able to rid the practice of law of the racists already in our ranks, but we can sure as hell stop embracing new ones.
While you're here, please go follow @xjelliott and ask her to please please please run for Arkansas Governor, and if she does, please support her in her race against whichever horrible GOP candidate runs. ❤️
These five women have already been doing actual work to address this problem, and I'm sure with far more grace and less casual profanity. Please follow them and support their efforts: @WashburnLawDean @aonwuachi @DMConwayDean @ProfessorMutch @danielleholley
Also, Shelby County Commissioner @tamisawyer is in Memphis serving her community, while putting up with heaps of racist, misogynistic bullshit. Follow her.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think @EdPsychAction and Christopher L. Mathis are doing a doctoral study in this area. (Twitter is giving me trouble tagging Christopher) https://twitter.com/iamcmathis/status/1347753448587059200

I've got to call it a night. Thank you to @jadalm_ for immediately calling out the half-assedness of the first couple of tweets. She sparked this. ❤️ https://twitter.com/jadalm_/status/1347670336905601026
I'm a white woman who has lived her entire 36 years south of the Mason Dixon line. If you get/got blocked after quote tweeting this thread or commenting, it's not because the "left is out of control." It's because you know damn well what racism is, and you just want a fight.
If you're here to "own" me, GET--and I cannot stress this enough--THE FUCK out. Grown-ups are talking.
