Why Ging Freecss does not deserve the hate he gets in the fandom, a thread:
so first of all let’s go over why the fandom hates him mostly: he left gon behind. there are i think two versions of the story. 1, being that he left gon there with gon’s aunt mito and telling her that the mom cannot be in his life either. 2, mito took custody of gon forcefully
in the 1999 version it is stated that gon’s mom died due to an unknown illness. but the big theory of ging having asexually reproduced during a greed island card is also plausible. in all of these cases the fact that ging had to raise gon ALONE, was unwanted.
gon’s mom could have been one of the creators of greed island, died due to an illness or broke up with ging. understand that if ging wanted to become a parent in the first place (we still don’t know if the pregnancy was wanted or not), he wanted to do it together with his partner
and so, gon was born with only ging to raise him. ging was one of the best hunters in the world, continuously travels and lives a risky life overall. gon could not be raised in those circumstances.
so either mito took gon away forcefully because she understood that or ging gave gon to her in hope that she could raise him well. mito was a good candidate for raising gon. gon turned out to be the joyful, happy kid he was meant to be regardless of who he was raised by
so basically, ging gave up gon because he knew that gon would be raised better by someone who had the time and patience to raise a child. “but ging still ran away and tried to avoid gon!” yes he definitely did, but in a more reasonable way that presented in the anime
in this scene, ging says himself that he can’t face gon. it’s because of his guilt and he’s scared to face the consequences of how gon had turned out, since he had never seen gon since he was a baby. he admits to his actions by telling gon that he’s an “awful person”
now why would someone that’s supposedly be so selfish and arrogant tell his child that he’s the bad guy? i think it is obvious that ging is trying to make himself a monster in gon’s eyes, preventing gon from feeling guilty as if he might have done something to make his dad leave
by making it such a big challenge to find him he’s making sure that gon has the willpower to see him, and that he wants to see his dad. if he’d be angry he probably wouldn’t have bothered that much. once they’ve finally met, ging still acts cold and pretend to not care,
just to make sure that gon doesn’t blame himself. after he realizes that gon doesn’t blame anyone, just accepts the way things been and understand ging’s reasons, that’s when their bonding starts.
gon doesn’t refer to ging as his dad, but just ging. he doesn’t see him as his father, also making ging feel better since that means that gon didn’t come all this way to get his father back, but to get to know who brought him to this world
from that point on ging is comfortable talking with gon as they are equals since gon feels the same way. they meet up on the highest tree and share their stories and talk about everything as friends.
so solely disliking ging on the fact that he left his son behind is not a solid reason (unless personal reasons, ofcourse).
ging definitely isn’t the worst character, if you think about the actions that hisoka, the phantom troupe and the zoldyck family have done.

do i believe ging isnt a good dad? absolutely. i don’t even consider him a father figure at all, regardless of good or bad. but do i believe he deserve the immense hate he gets within the fandom? no, his actions are not as nearly as bad when it comes to other characters
the other reason i hear people dislike ging because of his personality. yes, you’re absolutely right. he has little bitch energy and i love him for that
and yes, of course you may dislike ging, i’m just explaining here why i think he didn’t do as much wrong as the fandom makes him out to have done. sometimes one just need to look into it a bit more.
end of thread.
