HEAD COACH THREAD! With all this HC talk and my craziness oozing out- or passion as I see it. Dedicating a thread to the best coach I know. And the man that is responsible for my passion and love of football. Sharing many stories and clips below. 1/
My dad spent 38 years as a coach at @EdisonChargers @EdisonFootball_ 7 as an assistant (1979-1985) and 31 as a head coach (1986-2016). He played at Edison from 71-74. (Then 🏈 at OSU) When he retired in 2016, he had spent 42 years of the schools 48 at Edison (opened in 1969) /2
ON TOP of being a head football coach the entire time. He was 14 year women’s varsity basketball coach tallying over 260 wins, a 1987 CIF title (31-2)! Also a stint at head coach of women’s cross country and coached Shelley Taylor to a state title in 1991. /3
He’s always preached the importance of character, integrity, doing the right thing, especially when no one is looking. “Revolving Integrity” he would say. He wanted, not good but GREAT STUDENT- athletes. He demanded they work as hard in the classroom as they did on the field. /5
“The most competitive man is often the most prepared man” He won league title after title with lesser talented teams then his opponents because his teams were more prepared. He watched more film and studied his opponents tirelessly! “Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance” /6
“Taking 1 for the team” in 1994 a game for a league title. A star player foolishly called a fake punt in the 4th, it was botched & the other team scored, costing Edison a win and a title. He told the media he called the fake to save embarrassment and blame from his player. /7
“Never compromise your convictions” As competitive as he was. His first and most important goal was always to teach. Teach his athletes right from wrong at all times. And he always led by example!

He constantly would read important material/clips to his teams. /8
It’s easy to work hard in the fall. But what are you doing the other 9 months of the year?

12 months a year he preached hard work and leadership, no days off if you want to be great. The blessing and the curse of team sports. How accountable are you? /9
He was a firm believer in visualizing. After everything he did all week long to prepare his teams to the best of his abilities, he would visualize on mornings of game day. “Call this play, in this situation, if they show this, run that” he was a master of his craft. /10
Intense and fiery on the field, gentle and a heart of gold off the field (and in life).

He cared about everyone, athletes, non-athletes, coaches, opponents faculty. Away from the field he has always made an effort to put a smile on someone face or help someone in need. /11
Have some fun in the sun! No one likes conditioning but he always found ways to mix it up and have everyone compete and enjoy all aspects of being a team and the beautiful game of football.

Make no mistake- there was punishment runs and those were never fun for anyone. /12
A friendship and an equal respect was formed decades ago between 2 powerhouses. Coach White had a gift of having his teams perform at the highest level in the biggest of games. Some of his most vivid memories were triumphant wins and crushing losses against @MDFootball /13
As a coach, when his athletes would succeed, there was no greater feeling for him. And it never had to be just about football. Players getting into med school, graduating law school, becoming policemen or firefighters. He is proud of every life accomplishment of theirs. /14
Heartbreak- One of the hardest and most difficult times in his career was in 1983 as an assistant, when his favorite player, Matt Hombs, was tragically killed in a car crash on a recruiting trip at Boise State. My older brother, who was born in 1986, was named after him. /15
There is always help along the way.

“I had two great parents Who have taught me right from wrong. I’ve tried to live by that. I’m in charge 150 players every year it’s on my shoulders to be a leader and a role model and I pride myself on that” - Coach White in 1998. /16
He isn’t perfect, however.. He constantly bends the truth on how well he treated refs over the years.

*38 years as coach he never was kicked out of a game. My brothers 8th grade BBall game, gets ejected for asking the ref to scoot up. /17
Soooo close! -2001 CIF
Undefeated Edison took on 3x defending champs Long Beach Poly. Tied 28-28 in the 4th but a late surge by Poly was 2 much for Edison!

Poly finished #2 Nationally and had 26 D1 players and 7 future NFL’ers. TWO still active. We fought to the end! /18
