1) Let's reflect. Here is the news, as seen from abroad.
President of country X, fearing he might lose an election, rushes through an appointment to the Supreme court on a narrow partisan vote, saying he'll need her vote should the election be disputed & end up before the court.
2) Then, in televised debate, he crudely insults the opposing candidates, refuses to follow debate rules, and does not commit to accepting the results of the election. Nonetheless he loses a reasonably fair election in a landslide.
3) Yet the president does not accept defeat, instead vigorously promoting a host of bizarre conspiracy theories about rigged voting machines, dead voters, fraudulent mail-in ballots, claiming he actually won in a landslide if only the "legal" votes were counted. He clogs the
4) courts with frivolous and unfounded lawsuits, which are thrown out and lost almost as quickly as they are filed; but the President denounces the courts for not accepting them.
He then pressures members of his party, state officials, and his own Vice President to either change

6) they "stop the steal" and vote for him to return as President. His supporters follow his direction to march to the Capitol. Once there, they overpower the police, force entry to the building and proclaim (while Congress members are being evacuated and sheltered) the
7) President did win re-election. Eventually, additional police and military troops regain control and clear the building, but in the melee five people die. Congress returns and at 3 am officially recognizes the challenger as the winner of the election.
8) What would we think of such a country -- would we cry for it? Cheer the survival of its democracy now while worrying about the future? Would we have thought, even two years ago, that this could actually be our own USA?
9) This is why the GOP must now repudiate Trump and remove him from office. Otherwise they will forever be stamped with their support for sedition, abuse of the courts, contempt for Congress, and rejection of American elections, even those overseen by GOP states and officials.
