Earlier the government told media it had 'extended the eviction ban'.

The details are out and in fact this is a LIE.

@RobertJenrick has given the go ahead to evictions of large numbers of people in rent debt starting Monday. Just as Covid deaths reach a new high.

THREAD ⬇️
Previously, you couldn't be evicted by a bailiff for being behind on your rent unless you were in more than 9 months worth of rent debt AND that debt was from before the pandemic.

Here's a photo of the old rules.

Shockingly from Monday you can be evicted by bailiffs for just 6 months of rent debt. That now INCLUDES debt due to income lost since Covid.

Lots of us have lost income - 840,000 people are in rent debt. Many have more than 6 months of arrears and now face homelessness

3/
The government admits evictions and homelessness cause an increase in Covid transmission and lead to preventable deaths.

But it's making a political decision that people who have fallen into 6 rent arrears can be made homeless. Just to protect the profits of landlords.

4/
The Government has sneaked out this desperately cruel legislation on a Friday night. Clearly they’re ashamed - and they should be.

Everyone is rightly being asked to make enormous sacrifices to get transmissions down. Except landlords.
It would be SO EASY for the government to stop the courts from issuing eviction notices and to write off rent debt.

Renters: join your local tenants union. Don’t let them get away with this.

MPs, councillors and journalists: raise your voices.
If you’re in debt or worried about eviction:

1️⃣Do not leave your home just because your landlord tells you to.

2️⃣Only a court can instruct a bailiff to evict you & there's a big backlog in cases.

3️⃣Most of us are still protected from eviction.

Being in rent debt and facing issues with your housing during the pandemic is not your fault. It’s the fault of your landlord and the government.
