I've got thoughts about "if more people studied non-stem fields we wouldn't have a nazi problem" and if you've been near me a while you know I often have such thoughts. But our current levels of devaluation of the humanities is more than just "have people pick other majors."
When I was in college, and twitter informs me the times haven't changed, if you majored in English, Art, History, or any "soft science", the joke was that you were preparing for your future in fast food franchise management. A non trivial number of us go into these fields anyway.
And sure enough we mostly work either outside those fields or in very creatively maneuvred slices of the gig economy.

Because humanities majors exist, humanities jobs barely do, because our society devalues people with this expertise.
You don't have to go to college to know what rising fascism looks like, BUT IT HELPS, because the schools barely have funding for anything that's not computers or football. (I do not have a problem with either computers or football, HOWEVER, neither helps with this.)
We're losing the last of our ww2 survivors and that's not helping either, because OK so you never go to college. Your Romani grandpa who was at Pearl Harbor would explode your eardrums if you so much as said hello to a skinhead oh wait, he died a decade ago.
So we've got pre-college history having no budget and mostly being a propaganda machine. We've got college history being an expensive road to nowhere professionally. We've got our last living family from WW2 becoming ancestors. That's all bad, but...
... *breathes*

NONE OF THAT SHOULD FUCKING MATTER BECAUSE YOU SHOULDN'T NEED ANYONE TO TELL YOU IT'S WRONG TO HURT PEOPLE.
Yeah. We have a shortage of people with material power who know what nazis look like.

We also have nazis. A lot of those nazis went to college as this week should have demonstrated.
We have a LOT of deep running rot in our society and the medicine to treat it isn't going to be as simple or singular in scope as "study more humanities."

Please do that tho. /fin
