RIP Tom Lasorda. A larger than life character, even when his diet was working. Everything said about him, good and otherwise, was true. Warts and all, he had a knack for making people happy and bringing out their best. 1/5
I was paying at a Starbucks near the Dodgers' Arizona spring-training camp. On the counter was an Easter basket with baseballs in place of eggs. From behind me, a left hand reached in and grabbed one of the baseballs. The familiar, crooked-fingered left hand of Tommy. 2/5
Typical Tommy, I thought, just taking what he wanted. "Kevin!" he said, looking embarrassed when he saw me. He explained: "I need this for a kid." It was true. He walked over to a father and boy in a Little League uniform and signed the baseball. And not only that. 3/5
20 minutes later, as I read a paper, Tommy was still talking with the boy, a pep talk to a young ballplayer he didn't know. It made me recall Bill Russell talking about being 17 and meeting Lasorda: "Wow, I'd never run into a guy like that before." We can all say that again. 4/5
Here's Dodgers writer @billplunkettocr on Lasorda's death last night, first of what I know will be many great remembrances over the next few days. 5/5 https://www.dailynews.com/2021/01/08/dodgers-hall-of-fame-manager-tommy-lasorda-dies-at-93/
