Some observations on the week;
1. School leaders nationally have done an incredible job. The logistics of moving to instant remote learning is mind-boggling. The profession as a whole should be proud. And people are welcome to express some appreciation.
2. Teachers need time and space to deliver raised stakes remote learning. Systems/delivery will evolve over the next few weeks. I’m so proud to lead my teachers. Tech may let us down at points though. If someone’s internet goes down at home (as has happened) don’t ‘report us’ 😩
3. Support staff in all schools need as much recognition as teachers. These people in my context deal with attendance, well-being, handing out laptops and testing. Never think a school is just full of teachers - support staff are gold dust. We couldn’t function without them.
4. Sabre-rattling by political leaders hasn’t helped. Parents are in the main very supportive and grateful. Please be patient with schools - many staff are already exhausted tonight. Improving remote provision is iterative -I’m hopeful @Ofstednews realise that (they will 🤞)
5. Critical worker attendance at schools is an issue in some places. We’ve developed a mixed provision model to ensure pupils on and offsite receive the exact same provision. Smaller schools are really struggling with numbers onsite - my heart goes out to our primary colleagues.
6. Year 11 pupils need to stay with us, hold on to knowing hard work = success. They need everyone to support, cuddle, cajole, cherish and motivate to get them through the next few weeks. There will be no exam clarity until March 😩 - every week is a chance to keep them focussed.
7. It’s been lovely to see pupils onsite/virtually. In all the noise we forget our pupils can energise us all, it’s what we came into the job for. For every unhappy parent there’s probably ten times that many who appreciate everything. Keep the pupils at the ❤️ of our ‘why’ 👍🙏
8. Whilst this may not be the time we need to look at the long term strategic landscape. Where has the pandemic left our school accountability system. It feels like it has become redundant for now. What is education FOR post-COVID? Discuss. #wheredowegofromhere
