Once again, we have an elected official completely oblivious to the primary function of government. Government exists to resolve exactly this category of urgent problem. (thread)+ https://twitter.com/l_stone/status/1347566709750845441
Representative government exists to resolve collective action problems - problems that *must* be solved (like a pandemic) but cannot not be resolved through simple negotiation and agreement. You will never get *everyone* to agree on the solution to a large scale problem.+
Humans just don't work that way. We see over and over that there are people who just won't voluntarily do what needs to be done to get this health crisis under control. After many years and volumes of research, we know that there is no reason to believe that will ever change.+
So, ideally, we elect representatives to resolve these problems on our behalf. We transfer control over aspects of our lives to them and give them the power to make rules and enforce them - about things like sharing the roads, not murdering one another, and sharing resources.+
So, when @fordnation wrings his hands and blames the public for not cooperating, he's abrogating his duty to act in the public interest as our duly elected leader. He has the tools and the power to design, pay for and implement effective solutions. He is simply choosing not to. +
And that is a serious problem. It means he is either ignorant of his duty or he is choosing to ignore it. If he is ignorant, he has no business being Premier. If he is choosing to ignore it, he is placing more importance on ideology than he is saving the lives of Ontarians.+
We deserve better. We deserve leaders who believe in the vital role that government plays in our lives. We deserve a Premier who is prepared to lead and wield the power of the state for the benefit of all.+
We don't deserve to die at the hands of someone who seems to believe the state is a joke, an inept group of powerless bureaucrats, a collection of assets that should be sold off to the highest bidder. We deserve a leader. (end)
