I remember picking up Tommy from the airport in New Orleans & driving him to grab a bite to eat. He begins giving me directions in “ my city” we pull up to what appears to be an abandoned building ( no windows) . We walk around back he gives a distinct knock, the door opens
and we walk into a very vibrant place with a vibe off of The Godfather, Tommy knew everyone in the place by 1st name, the all greeted each other w/ an embrace and a kiss to both cheeks. He introduced me as his nephew “ The Black Italian” all I could do was stare in amazement
in subsequent years he would always make it to New Orleans for my PreDraft workouts. The best players in my area would attend because I advertised his attendance . He would always joke w/ me & tell me his name was “ Crime” because “ Crime “ doesn’t pay & neither do I #RIPTOMMY
His passion and enthusiasm for the game of baseball was unparalleled. One year when he became a National Spokesperson for Long Horn, I would accompany him to a few restaurants where he was required to make an appearance. We would order 2/3 of EVERYTHING on the menu. #RIPTOMMY
Tommy truly BLED DODGER BLUE. In 2007, after I had moved on to the Rockies, I see him at the World Series in Denver. From across the room he points at me and says “ hey look it’s Benedict Arnold, he’s no longer Italian” Thanks for everything Tommy #RIP
