With only 13 days left of Trump's presidency, why is it important to impeach? A short thread 1/7
The first is to protect the safety and integrity of our country and world. There is no act so despicable, whether launching war or pardoning insurrectionists, that Trump isn't capable of. If removed from office even one day early, that's one less day he can wreak havoc 2/7
And this protection applies even before Senate vote to remove him. Impeachment tells Trump that, starting immediately, every additional seditious act he takes will be further evidence to be weighed by the Senate 3/7
The second reason is accountability. The peaceful transition of power is central to the functioning of any democracy. The strongest signal has to be sent that those that resist that peaceful transition are unfit for leadership 4/7
Accountability applies not only to Trump but to his fellow seditionists in Congress. Force all House and Senate members to go on the record as to whether they find Trump's actions, from strong arming state election officials to inciting a riot at the capital, to be defensible 5/7
A third reason is our international reputation and leadership. Trump has turned the US into the laughing stock of the world. There is no better way to start to turn the corner on that then to make clear to the world that the US thoroughly rejects Trump and Trumpism 6/7
The final reason is for history. Whether in 4, 40, or 400 years, do we want people to honor Trump as our other presidents, or instead learn that his actions were so objectionable that he was expelled? This is a defining moment in US history. Don't let us down. Impeach now! 7/ 7
